The day of romance
2025.02.04.
The celebration of Valentine’s Day began in Anglo-Saxon countries and by the end of the 20th century it had spread worldwide. It is named after Saint Valentine, the patron saint of lovers, the mentally ill and people with epilepsy. It became known and popular in Hungary as Valentine’s Day in the 1990s, when it was adopted in English as Valentine’s Day. On this holiday, lovers give their partner a gift, send a love message or organise romantic activities.
There are a number of beliefs associated with the celebration of Valentine’s Day that are worth trying out or observing:
- If an unmarried woman sees a sparrow on Valentine’s Day, her poor husband will be – but happy. On the other hand, if a tengelice flies over her, she will be married to a rich man.
- On Valentine’s Day morning, a kiss in love brings good luck.
- According to popular tradition, if the weather is cold and dry on that day, you can expect a good harvest.
- On this day, if a young wife cuts an apple in half, she will have as many children as the number of seeds she finds.
- When a young girl puts a laurel leaf under her pillow, she dreams the name of her future husband.
